Can health insurance alone make someone a dependent?

No. Health insurance coverage may be one support fact, but it does not by itself make someone a dependent.

A dependent must be a qualifying child or a qualifying relative. For an adult who supports themselves and no longer lives with the claimant, the analysis usually fails before any e-file issue matters.

Original example:

Jules, age 25, works full time, rents an apartment, and pays all personal living costs. A former caregiver keeps Jules on a family health plan and claims Jules as a dependent. Jules files a correct return and receives a duplicate-use rejection.

The fact that insurance coverage existed does not replace the dependency tests. Jules should file correctly and keep records showing income, residence, and support in case the IRS later asks for proof.
