Can parents e-file after a dependent filed first?
Sometimes, but only after confirming that the parents are actually entitled to claim the dependent.
For Tax Year 2024 and later current-year returns, the IRS provides an e-file path in a duplicate-dependent situation when the primary taxpayer has a current calendar-year IP PIN and the return otherwise validates. If that path is unavailable, or if the return is for a prior year, paper filing may be required.
Fresh example:
- Mina files her own return before her parents finish theirs.
- Her parents verify that Mina was their qualifying child for the year.
- Their current-year return rejects because Mina's SSN was already used.
- The parents check whether the primary taxpayer has a current calendar-year IP PIN before deciding whether to retransmit or paper file.
