Take fictional Red Maple Components. Its current ratio improved from 1.4 to 2.2, but inventory also doubled while sales stayed flat. A candidate who only memorizes current assets divided by current liabilities may celebrate the ratio. A candidate who understands business risk asks whether excess or obsolete inventory is hiding behind the improvement.

Build a two-column formula sheet. Column one is the calculation. Column two is the audit implication. For gross margin, write pricing, product mix, cost control, or inventory valuation. For debt-to-equity, write leverage and covenant pressure. For payback period, write liquidity focus and weakness in ignoring cash flows after payback.

Practice calculations enough that arithmetic does not distract you, but spend equal time explaining what the result means. If a question asks for the best management action, the formula may only get you halfway. The answer may depend on trend, benchmark, risk appetite, or whether the metric can be manipulated.
