Do I need Bill Campbell for CFA Level 3?
Everyone says Bill Campbell for the essays. Is it really that different from Schweser or the CFAI essays?
Most Level 3 candidates who passed used Bill Campbell or equivalent essay-focused practice. The CFA Level 3 essay section is graded by humans against a rubric and your phrasing matters. Generic essay practice rarely prepares you for the rubric.
What Bill Campbell offers for Level 3:
- Essays that match the CFA Institute style and length.
- Sample answers that show what graders look for: correct identification of the requested action, supporting calculations with shown work, brief justification.
- Common essay traps (overwriting, missing the requested action, unsupported recommendations).
Alternative: practice with publicly available CFA Institute past essays where you can find them, plus a smaller paid set from a different provider. This is cheaper but the volume is lower.
The candidates who fail Level 3 most often fail the essay section despite passing the item set. The gap is usually that they did not practice writing answers under time, only read sample answers. Either Bill Campbell or equivalent timed essay practice is the fix.
