Does an amended dependent return unlock e-file?
Not immediately. An amended return can correct the first filer's tax position, but the IRS still has to process the amendment. The duplicate SSN conflict may continue to affect e-file validation while that happens.
The right next step depends on the year and the eligible filing path:
- If the second filer is entitled to the dependent and the return is a current-year Tax Year 2024 or later return, check whether the primary taxpayer's current calendar-year IP PIN can support e-file.
- If the return is a prior-year return, or the IP PIN path is not available, paper filing is usually the practical route.
- In either case, keep dependency proof ready for any later IRS notice.
The amendment by the first filer is helpful evidence of cleanup, but it is not a guarantee that e-file will suddenly accept the second return.
