How long does the EA exam actually take to prepare for?

Some courses say 50 hours, some say 200. What is realistic for someone working full time?

Total study time across all three parts is roughly 200 to 300 hours for someone without a tax background, 100 to 200 hours for someone with prior tax exposure.

Breakdown:

  • Part 1 (Individuals): 80 to 120 hours. Largest content footprint, includes foundational basis and filing concepts.
  • Part 2 (Businesses): 100 to 140 hours. Deepest computational content, partnership and S corp basis rules add depth.
  • Part 3 (Representation): 30 to 50 hours. Shortest by far. Mostly procedural rules from Circular 230 plus form-specific knowledge.

At 12 to 15 hours per week, a typical full-time-worker candidate completes the cycle in 16 to 20 weeks. At 8 to 10 hours per week, the cycle takes six to seven months.

The 50-hour-per-part claim from some courses is achievable only for candidates already working in tax preparation. For most people it understates the time needed for Part 1 and especially Part 2.

The most under-estimated topics:

  • Part 1: basis rules (cost, gift, inherited, adjusted), Schedule C self-employment tax mechanics, filing status edge cases.
  • Part 2: partnership basis (inside vs outside, debt allocations), S corp basis, Form 1041 DNI.

Track hours per topic, not just total. If you have spent 30 hours on Part 1 income and 5 hours on Part 1 basis three weeks before your exam, the balance is off.
