How should I document a linked workbook?
My workpaper pulls revenue from another file using lookup formulas. What documentation does the reviewer expect?
Document a linked workbook by retaining the source file or export, naming the linked range, showing the extraction date and period, and reconciling the linked data to a source total.
If the workbook uses lookups across files, add a mapping or exception tab showing unmatched items, duplicate names, manual matches, and any excluded records. A formula that pulls the right number today may break later if the external file moves, names change, or a row is added.
The goal is not to eliminate formulas. The goal is to make the formula reviewable.
