Is employment tax e-file the same as a tax deposit?
No. Electronic filing and electronic deposits are separate payroll compliance steps.
Electronic deposits transfer payroll tax payments. Form 941 e-file transmits the employment tax return. A practitioner also has to consider the signature and authorization path, especially if filing as an authorized provider or reporting agent.
Use this checklist:
- What employment tax form is being filed?
- Who is transmitting it?
- What authorization has the client signed?
- What signature method is required?
- Were deposits already made electronically?
- Does current IRS guidance require e-file for this filer or role?
Mixing these steps is how otherwise careful payroll workflows get messy.
